JICA海外協力隊。第1陣の濵嶋に続き、第2陣の村井が着任。

写真は再会を喜び独立記念広場にて撮影されたもの。活動が佳境に差し掛かって自信のみなぎる濵嶋とは対照的に、初の海外生活で不安を隠しきれない村井。

先週末、村井の着任から1か月が経過。生活が落ち着いた頃なので、オンライン会議を開催し、近況と今後の活動について議論。

ポン灌漑地区に派遣された濵嶋は圃場試験やコメ市場調査に奔走し充実した日々。灌漑開発公社の職員とも良好な関係を構築している様子。ウェタ灌漑地区に派遣された村井は、濵嶋の活動を参考に自らの活動計画を立案し、既に公社と議論を始めているとのこと。

いずれ村井も濵嶋のような面構えに。

私の隊員生活は任期終盤まで悶々とした日々。それとは好対照の二人。きっと大きな何かを手に入れて帰国するだろう。

Working Together

JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. Following the first batch Hamajima, the second batch Murai has arrived.

The photo was taken at Independence Square, celebrating their reunion. In contrast to Hamajima, who is brimming with confidence as his activities reach their peak, Murai cannot hide her anxiety about her first overseas assignment.

Last weekend marked one month since Murai’s arrival. Now that her life has settled down, we held an online meeting to discuss recent developments and future activities.

Hamajima, dispatched to the Kpon Irrigation Scheme, is leading fulfilling days rushing between field trials and rice market surveys. He appears to have built good relationships with the staff of the Irrigation Development Authority. Murai, dispatched to the Weta Irrigation Scheme, has formulated her own activity plan based on Hamajima’s activities and has already begun discussions with the authority. Eventually, Murai will likely develop the same confident demeanor as Hamajima.

My own volunteer life was filled with days of frustration until the end of my term – a stark contrast to these two. They will surely return home having gained something significant.
